Can Lids Explained: Easy-Open, Peel-off, Screw Cap, Overcap — Which One for Your Product?

Since 2014 · 3,180 m² factory, Shenzhen · 6 production lines, 10M+ cans/year · Tested to FDA 21 CFR 175.300 · Intertek-audited · 100% on-time dispatch

Buyers spend weeks on artwork and five minutes on the lid. Then the lid turns out to be the thing consumers notice most. The end is what they touch, pull, twist or complain about. It also decides whether your product stays sealed from the factory to the kitchen.

Here are the four lid systems we make and fit at XYH CAN, what each one is for, and how to choose.

Easy-open end (EOE)

A steel end with a scored panel and a ring-pull. The consumer lifts the tab and peels the whole panel away. It gives a hermetic, retort-capable seal, which is why it dominates beverages, wet pet food and canned food.

We fit EOE on the 100ml beverage can (can no. 202), on pet food cans in Ø73 and Ø83, and on household and food cans. For a beverage, the EOE is the standard: it is what the filler's seamer expects and what the consumer expects.

Things to know: EOE is seamed onto the body by your filling line, so the end diameter has to match your seamer. The ring-pull is single-use; once open, there is no reclose.

Peel-off membrane end

A thin foil or laminate membrane heat-sealed onto a steel ring. The consumer peels it off like a yoghurt lid. It is used almost exclusively for dry products that need an oxygen and moisture barrier until first use: milk powder, nutrition powder, protein, instant coffee.

On our milk and nutrition powder cans in Ø99 and Ø126 the membrane end is paired with a PP overcap. The membrane gives the seal; the overcap gives reclose and protects the membrane in transit. Membrane ends are suited to nitrogen flushing on the fill line because the seal is applied after flushing.

Screw cap

A threaded metal or plastic cap on a necked tinplate body. Screw caps are for products opened and closed many times: coffee beans, loose tea, spices, snacks. There is no hermetic seal in the retort sense, but with a liner the closure is tight enough for dry goods.

We use screw lids on coffee cans and tea tins in Ø68 to Ø105 (100–453g). Some roasters combine an EOE for the factory seal with a screw lid over it for reclose, and we can build both onto one body.

Overcap

Not a seal at all, but a plastic cap that snaps over the can end. It protects the primary seal, keeps dust off, and gives the consumer a reclose after opening. Overcaps are usually PP and are the standard partner for membrane ends on powder cans. They can be colour-matched.

Lid Hermetic seal Reclose Typical products XYH CAN bodies
Easy-open end (EOE) Yes (retortable) No Beverages, wet pet food, food Ø53 100ml, Ø73/Ø83 pet, food cans
Peel-off membrane end Yes (dry barrier) No (needs overcap) Milk/nutrition powder, protein Ø99, Ø126 powder cans

PP overcap No Yes Over membrane or EOE Powder cans, coffee cans

Peel-off lid vs easy open: the question we get most

If the product is wet, retorted or carbonated, you need an EOE. A membrane cannot hold pressure or go through a retort. If the product is a dry powder that is scooped out over weeks, the membrane plus overcap is right: full barrier until first open, then convenient reclose. The two systems are not interchangeable and the decision follows the product, not the look.

How the lid changes your quote

Each end type has its own tooling, so the lid is a separate line on your quote. It also affects MOQ: screw-cap coffee and tea tins start at 10,000 printed pieces, household EOE cans at 10,000, powder cans with membrane end and overcap from 1,200. Full numbers are on can sizes and lids. If your filler's seamer is set for a particular end, tell us before we sample.

Straight talk

An EOE adds cost over a plain sanitary end, and a membrane end adds cost over an EOE. If your product is a gift tin or a dry snack that is eaten in one sitting, a simple slip lid may be all you need; we make those too, under gift tins and snack canisters. Do not pay for a barrier your product does not need.
